Position Summary:

The Controller position has the responsibility and oversight of the central accounting office and multiple entity financials.  This individual contributes support to leadership and the continued growth of the organization by ensuring the integrity of the accounting information by recording, verifying, consolidating and coordinating transactions. This individual will strive to achieve excellence in and timeliness of financial reporting as well as offer insights to the leadership team relative to enhancing profitability and productivity in a high integrity, team orientated way that assures internal and external customer satisfaction.

The individual in this position must have demonstrated experience working with all members, levels and functions of an organization.  Areas of influence and responsibility include: accounting, costing, compliance, expense and project management and analysis.

This position plans and directs accounting activities within the finance department and applies principles of accounting to analyze financial information and prepare financial reports by performing the following   duties summarized below.

Primary Functions and Duties

  • Assists in the development and implementation of goals, policies, priorities, and procedures relating to financial management, budget, accounting, and/or payroll.
  • Leads preparation of various financial statements and reports. Prepare financial statements for management and maintain historic financial information and metrics.
  • Leads installation and maintenance of accounting records to show receipts and expenditures.
  • Leads maintenance of general and subsidiary ledgers, accounts receivable, revenue distribution, depreciation, cost, property, and operating expenses, and insurance records.
  • Leads cost analyses, profitability, job costing and rate studies.
  • Prepares statements and reports of estimated future costs and revenues.
  • Leads internal audits involving review of accounting and administrative controls.
  • Establishes system controls for new financial systems and develops procedures to improve existing systems.
  • Reviews, investigates, and corrects errors and inconsistencies in financial entries, documents, and reports.
  • Coordinates preparation of external audit materials and external financial reporting including federal, state, and local reports and tax returns.
  • Reviews financial statements with management personnel.
  • Understands IT systems and how to use them effectively; leads installation and maintenance of new accounting, timekeeping, payroll, inventory, property, and other related procedures and controls.
  • Works closely with other department managers to ensure cooperation and consistency with financial practices and priorities.
  • Assists VP of Business Services in regular banking requirements.
  • Assist the Assistant Controller with the set-up of the financials to ensure that we have continuity between our sister companies as well as coverage when needed.
  • Establish and maintain a system of internal controls to safeguard corporate assets and to insure reasonableness of financial information.
  • Day to day leadership, management, and prioritization of working capital initiatives.
  • Establish and maintain procedures for gathering and reporting subsidiary information.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives including application of knowledge and technology to new opportunities.
  • Interpret financial information; perform special studies, financial analysis and models as directed.

Qualifications and Competencies         
  •  Bachelor's degree in accounting.
  • 7-10 years experience, preferably in the contracting, construction or related industries.
  • Experience in job cost accounting.
  • CPA strongly preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to deal effectively with all levels of personnel, both internal and external.
  • Strong computer skills including use of common office applications and accounting software.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and stay organized.
  • Demonstrated commitment of professionalism, confidentiality, integrity, and sound judgment in conducting business affairs.
  • Ability to effectively perform the above mentioned essential job functions.
